ASP.NET Core ERP Project Structure — Feature-Based Architecture

When building a large ERP application, a clean project structure is essential for making the code easy to understand, modify, test, and maintain.

Instead of keeping all controllers, services, repositories, DTOs, and entities in separate global folders, we can organize the application by business feature.

6️⃣ Repositories Handle data-access operations, such as retrieving employees, saving payroll records, or updating inventory. 7️⃣ Data Contains ApplicationDbContext.cs, which manages database access and entity configurations through Entity Framework Core. 8️⃣ Middleware & Extensions Middleware handles cross-cutting HTTP concerns, while Extensions can keep service registration and application configuration organized. 9️⃣ Program.cs & appsettings.json Program.cs configures the application, dependency injection, middleware, and routing. appsettings.json stores configuration such as logging settings and other non-secret application options. 🔄 Architecture Flow Client → Controller → Service → Repository → Database For example, when an employee record is created: The Controller receives the request. The Service applies business rules. The Repository saves the data. The Database stores the employee record. The API returns the appropriate response. 🚀 Why Use Feature-Based Architecture? ✅ Easy to understand and navigate ✅ Faster modifications and debugging ✅ Better separation of business functionality ✅ Easier unit testing and maintenance ✅ Simpler addition of new modules ✅ Suitable for growing ERP applications For example, when adding an Attendance, Leave Management, Procurement, or CRM module, you can follow the same structure without cluttering unrelated features.
